JPG, PNG, WebPAbout the Image Threshold tool
The Image Threshold tool runs entirely in your browser. Drop or select an image, set the Threshold slider between 0 and 255, and click Apply. For each pixel, the tool first computes luminance as 0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B; pixels with luminance greater than the threshold become white (255, 255, 255), and pixels with luminance less than or equal to the threshold become black (0, 0, 0). Higher threshold values produce more black pixels; lower values produce more white. Nothing is uploaded; all processing happens locally.
How to use it
- Click the drop zone or drop an image file onto it.
- Drag the Threshold slider — higher values darken the result.
- Click Apply to render the effect onto the image.
- Click Download to save the result, Reset to restore the original, or Clear to start over.
Frequently asked questions
What threshold value should I use? 128 is a good starting point for most photos. Lower it to keep more bright detail; raise it to keep more dark detail.
What is the output format? The download is a PNG file. This preserves detail and avoids compression artifacts.
Does this tool upload my images? No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
Can I apply the effect multiple times? Thresholding is idempotent — applying it twice produces the same result as applying it once. Use Reset to return to the original color image.
